Diabetes mellitus is an incurable disease which reduces the body’s ability to produce and/or react to insulin. The result of this is chronic elevated blood sugar with an increased risk of hyperglycemia episodes. It is estimated that over 366 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes, generating $465 billion of diabetes related healthcare costs each year. In the U.S. alone, the annual cost of diabetes treatment is over $174 billion.
Insulin injections give many diabetics control over their blood sugar levels. However, problems related to improper methods of insulin preparation provide many health risks to insulin users. It has been found that about 50 percent of insulin users perform their injections incorrectly. Because of this, Group 22 has identified a need for a product which reduces the chance of user error during the preparation of insulin injections.
